In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
