This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
