The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
